In our history books we often find the abusive Spanish friar as the target of ridicule and tirade by the Filipino patriots of the Propaganda Movement. The friars who belonged to four major religious orders were missionaries in the Philippines since the early days of colonization: Augustinians, Dominicans, Franciscans and Augustinian Recollects. We read about the virulent tirades against them in the highly satirical essays of our heroes Marcelo H. del Pilar and Graciano Lopez Jaena and in the novels Noli me tangere and El Filibusterismo of Dr. Jose Rizal.
