Homily - Santiago, Isabela

SANTIAGO CITY. MAY 12, 2006. The journey continues as we moved on the twelfth day of Biyaheng Recoletos 400, a Nationwide Caravan-Pilgrimage. Prayers, greetings, financial and material help continue to pour in support of the Caravan. Just the night before the twelfth, Hon. Edward Isidro, mayor of Mallig, Isabela and an alumni of San Sebastian College -Manila, visited and surprised the group with a whole litsong baboy.

Unfazed by the coming typhoon and the sudden downpour, the group traveled early to St. James Parish, Santiago City, province of Isabela. At six a.m. the short video production Biyaheng Recoletos was played with Professor Romanillos giving the introduction. A considerable number of parishioners attended the Holy Mass presided by Rev. Fr. Ferdinand Hernando, OAR.

Right after the healing mass, the group had breakfast at the parish office with Fr. Noel S. Cruz, MS, the parish priest, Fr. Benny Thadathikunnel, MS, assistant parish priest, Ma’am Winnie Carreon, and Mrs. Purificacion Obra, both of which coordinated our stay there.

We spent a few hours of rest back at the University of La Sallete (high school department), before hitting the road by 1:30 p.m. on to our next stop. The crew arrived at Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya after a two hour trip. Upon arrival, a group led by Mrs. Baby Panganiban, the hospital administrator, immediately left for Veteran General Hospital. The seminarians together with one Camillian sister, Sr. Leandrina Aclan, CS, a SARF member Ms. Elena Culaton and a group of Legion of Mary headed by Bro. Mike Belasco visited and prayed for the sick. Dios tagafi! (Good evening), said one of the patients as he warmly greeted the group with the folk language Gaddang.

Another Healing Mass was celebrated after dusk at the parish of St. Dominic de Guzman Cathedral, Bayombong. Fr. Soy in his homily, accentuated on the three aspects of the Christian faith; Life of prayer, a life based on truth and a life based on goodness. We are challenged to live a prayerful life but not just a prayerful life, rather a life which is also acted, out of goodness, out of a pure heart and a life founded on the truth, that is, Jesus Christ.

Rev. Fr. Ted Lazo, the parish priest, welcomed us for dinner at the parish convent. During dinner, candles with a 400 figure were lighted to symbolize our oneness in the celebration of the four hundredth year of arrival of the first Recollect missionaries in the Philippine shore. Viva Recoletos!

After our simple celebration we headed for the pastoral center where we closed the night with our vespers and night prayers.

- Rev. Fr. Soy Hernando, OAR
