Museo Recoleto

Brief History
Museo Recoleto gathers and preserves principally the relics and memorabilia of the Augustinian Recollects (or Recoletos) in the Philippines. It grew from a collection of mostly religious objects received from the houses, convents, churches, and areas served by the Recollects in the country. It was officially inaugurated on December 5, 1988, in the wake of the IV Centenary celebration of the Birth of the Augustinian Recollection (1588-1988). It was finally housed in its new and more spacious site at Bulwagang Recoletos, located at Mira-nila Homes, Tandang Sora Avenue, Quezon City, on February 6, 1994.

It occupies a floor area of 648 square meters for its main exhibits and utilizes 1,512 square meters for function rooms, totaling a floor area of 2,160 square meters.

Vision Statement
Museo Recoleto aims to be a lasting depository of the cultural heritage that the Augustinian Recollects have engendered in the Philippine Archipelago in the service of the Recoletos communities and the Filipino nation. It collects and conserves this patrimony for information, study and appreciation. It will promote expanded research on Recollect history in this part of the world. It will closely cooperate with agencies in the preservation of Recollect monuments, sites, and objects. It will collaborate with and open to related acquisitions and study for the benefit of the general public.

To achieve these goals, the Museo Recoleto is situated adjacent to a Library. It has a Conservation Laboratory and is connected with the Archivo Recoleto, the Recollect central archives. It avails of an audio-visual room, conference room, and an exhibition gallery.

Sections
The Museum has the following sections: Bells, Furnitures (bed, chairs, armchairs, etc.), Crucifixes (metal, ivory, and wood), Metal utensils (communion plates, censers, chalices, "aureoles", reliquaries, etc.), Sacristy (vestments, "cajoneria"), Main Altar (wooden altar, tabernacle, vases, tabernacle lamp, chairs, "ciriales"). Images (wooden, metal, plaster of Paris), Church Decors (mostly wooden), Tabernacles (wooden and metal), rare books (catechisms, grammars, "novenarios," 14-volume "Historia General de Filipinas"), Pictorial (photos of sample recollect churches and forts and pictures of China mission). The principal treasure of Museo recoleto is the dark image of the Blessed Virgin, "Nuestra Seņora de la Salud" brought by the first Recollect missionaries to the Philippines in 1606.

Activities
Museo Recoleto sponsors art workshops for children. Several exhibits are on-going at the Gallery supervised by the Museum. The Conservation Laboratory accepts restoration and conservation works from other institutions. With the multi-purpose function rooms, it admits seminars, conferences, gatherings and meetings.
