Four teams parade at the sports center

May 16, 2004 is a date to reminisce for Filipinos under the pastoral care of the Recoletos Fathers in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Filipinos in the four parishes under the umbrella of Recoletos Family, namely: St. Augustine Parish, Linyuan; St. Ezekiel Moreno Parish, Fanhua; St. Joseph Parish, Hsiaogang; and St. Michael Parish, Tungkang flocked to TAFA Sports Center, Taliao for the annual Recoletos Family Summer Sports Fest. The annual event was set to further foster friendship and camaraderie among Filipinos through sports.

The Sports fest commenced at about 9:15 in the morning with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass presided by Fr. Joel Dequilla, OAR and with Frs. Jerome Virtudazo, OAR and Adrian Paule as concelebrants. Fr. Adrian, a visiting priest from Pampanga, Philippines delivered the homily.
Carried by the euphoria of the event the participants were oblivious of the scorching heat of the sun as they paraded gleefully around the Sports Center donning their newly tailored uniforms. Each team was a picture of pride and joy as their respective beautiful muses were called forward and offered a bouquet of flowers. The ceremonial lighting of torch added spark to the exciting event. Then, everyone stood erect with their right hands at their breast as the Philippine national anthem was sung. The oath of sportsmanship soon ensued. Immediately after, Mr. Oliver Lanutan, the current president of the Recoletos family welcomed and thanked the participants and guests for gracing the occasion.

Mrs. Yolanda Peñaranda, the welfare officer of the Labor Department of MECO, Kaohsiung further elated the participants by her succinct but inspiring speech. Everyone was also entertained by a dance presentation of three beautiful girls from St. Michael Parish, Tungkang.
After the opening ceremonies, the games formally started. Four sports were played on this summer’s sports fest, namely: basketball, volleyball, dart, and chess. Save for basketball, all other events featured both men and women. Time constraints led the organizers of the sports fest to employ a knockout system, that is, a loss automatically disqualifies a person or a team to vie for the championships. Basketball, though said to be a game for big men still remains the favorite sport of Filipinos.
